eastreak has submitted a request 
to The Steamship Authority to 
resume year-round service to 
Martha’s Vineyard. 
In 2023, the company had been li-
censed to conduct passenger trips 
between New Bedford and Vineyard 
Haven throughout the year but dis-
continued the service after having only 
30 to 40 passengers per day. The initial 
request had been based on a planned 
extension of rail service from Boston 
that would allow people to travel to 
the Vineyard without crossing the 
traffic-heavy Cape Cod Bridge. 
With the commuter line to New Bed-
ford completed in late March 2025, 
the ferry is looking to expand service 
once again to Martha’s Vineyard. 
They are also exploring options for 
grant funding manage potential win-
ter service operating losses. 
The Steamship Authority has asked 
Seastreak to consider adding a 
Woods Hole stop to support workers 
currently commuting by road. 
Seastreak service to the Vineyard this 
season is scheduled to end Oct. 12.
