57 SEPTEMBER 2026 U.S. COAST GUARD New Digital Mariner Credentialing System Launched U.S. COAST GUARD T he U.S. Coast Guard has re- leased Navita™, a new digital platform designed to stream- line the application and issuance of merchant mariner credentials. The Latin word for “sailor,” Navita™ (pronounced “Nā·vï·ta”) will reduce paper-based applications and manual processing by providing a simplified electronic application. The new pro- cess will reduce common errors and improve transparency of the mariner credentialing process. Navita™ is designed to provide mar- iners with a more intuitive, guided application experience. The system will help applicants identify applica- ble requirements, provide required information and documentation, and submit more complete applications. These improvements are expected to reduce delays associated with incom- plete submissions and streamline ap- plication processing over time. Navita™ features include: • A guided application that flags missing information in real time to prevent incomplete submissions • Automated fee calculation to assure correct payments • Integration with Pay.gov to streamline payments • Online submission of course completion records for training verification • Electronic sea service record submission Mariners can create user profiles, submit credentialing applications and supporting documents, access a user guide, and learn more about Navi- ta™ at the National Maritime Center (NMC) website. As a result of launching Navita™: • The Application Submission and Additional Information Portal (ASAP) will be discontinued. • The IASKNMC e-mail address will be discontinued for submitting inquiries to the NMC. • Paper applications are expected to be phased out within the next year. • REC personnel will continue to review application documents pre- sented during an appointment for completeness; however, applicants are encouraged to submit through Navita™ after the review. Applications received prior to Sept. 14, as well as applications submitted through Navita™, will continue to be processed on a first-in, first-out basis. Applications should not be submitted through Navita™ if previously submit- ted to the NMC. Mariners and maritime employers should continue to plan accordingly and submit applications early to avoid potential disruptions to employment or vessel operations.
