early half of all U.S. vessels operating today are more than 30 years old, according 
to the National Census of Ferry Operators from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation 
Statistics. As the ferry industry faces the need for generational fleet renewal, operators 
confront a complex decision landscape shaped by shifting (and at times conflicting) regulations, 
mounting emissions pressures, climbing construction costs, and the attractive but unfamiliar 
new generation of cleaner, more efficient, lower maintenance vessels. 
Sea Change, in service since 2024, utilizes compressed hydrogen gas as the first hydrogen-powered ferry in the U.S.
