In mid-November, the vessels returned to normal opera-
tions servicing Fire Island. The impact they made helping 
the city recover was invaluable. 
This year, Anderson and the team at Fire Island Ferries 
were presented with a plaque by O-High which reads: “In 
the aftermath of September 11, 2001, the crews and vessels 
of Fire Island Ferries answered the call to serve. Twenty-five 
years later, their service remains a reminder: the people who 
move a community every day may one day be called upon 
to move it through the extraordinary. Honoring those who 
answered them and those who carry the legacy forward.”
As the country looks back on September 11, the work 
done in the days and months following the attacks must 
also be remembered. It was the selfless acts of many that 
made it possible for people to come together and find a 
way forward. 
Thank you to Fire Island Ferries and all those who an-
swered the call to aid. Their actions exemplify the maritime 
community’s strength, courage, and service.
During that time, the team 
from Fire Island Ferries 
conducted approximately 
1,000 trips to Manhattan 
and carried over  
100,000 passengers. 
In 2001, three Fire Island Ferries vessels, including Voyager, relocated to New York Harbor to aid recovery efforts following 9/11.
