8 JUNE 2018 • FOGHORN FOGHORNFOCUS: OPERATIONS For Millennials who want more transparency from their employer, apprentice- ship provides a clear pathway to both job advancement and pay raises. As an apprentice meets benchmarks and demonstrates competency his or her wages increase according to a pre-determined schedule created by the employer. Upon completion, apprentices earn an industry-recognized, portable, national creden- tial. Apprenticeship also provides Millennials with more opportunity for direct feedback on job performance through direct pairing with a workplace mentor. TransPORTs is one of only eight official U.S. Department of Labor national industry partners, focused on expanding apprenticeship with port and maritime- connected employers, associations, and labor unions. TransPORTs provides inter- ested companies with: • Deep technical assistance in apprenticeship program design and development, • Program support to ensure success and sustainability including administrative assistance and professional development for HR managers and supervising mentors, and • One-time incentive funding to assist companies by defraying initial program costs in strategic areas. n About the Author Barbara Murray is the Executive Director for TransPORTs, a U.S. Department of Labor industry partner expanding apprenticeship for multimodal transportation, distribution and logistics (TDL) industry employers nationwide.
