JUNE 2018 • FOGHORN 19 PERSPECTIVE there are no local options, reach out to PVA staff and your local Coast Guard Waterways Management Department for assistance in initiating one. At the Convention, I also assisted Mike McElroy and Ben Bernstein in leading the PVA Safety and Security Committee meeting. I appreciate the Committee’s assistance in summariz- ing the meeting notes, especially from those who had either met me once prior at the fall Annapolis meeting or had met me that day. I spoke to many PVA members while at the Convention about safety best practices, “sea stories,” and what challenges they face as operators under Coast Guard jurisdiction. Some food for thought: What gets repeated gets remem- bered: When you hear safety practices and policies, particularly from the most junior personnel repeated back to you, “I know, I know [insert company I ndustry training concludes and I officially report to United States Coast Guard Headquarters at CG-INV 1, the Office of Investigations and Marine Casualty Analysis, at the end of June 2018. The Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) was a major highlight of my Industry Training over the past year. The PVA staff welcomed me im- mediately, inviting me to sit in on phone conferences and meetings, and I was provided the privilege to attend the PVA Annual Convention at MariTrends 2018 in Savannah. I was afforded the opportunity to present to PVA members across the country and hear concerns and stories that championed safety. When I report to Coast Guard Headquarters, I plan to use lessons and insights learned from PVA and continue to foster working relationships with staff and members to continue our shared marine safety mission. While with PVA, I served as an interim spokesperson for slips, trips, and falls to advance the efforts of the PVA Safety and Security Committee and disseminate the Coast Guard and PVAQuality Partnership’s white paper on the topic through a presentation at the Convention. I updated the PVA’s online training manual based on the Quality Partnership’s white paper and the red line edits were approved at the Convention Safety and Security Committee meeting. These edits will be incorporated into the Marine Learning System online training program open to all PVA members. During the PVA convention, I par- ticipated in an active collaboration with the Coast Guard’s Passenger Vessel Safety Specialists to update a list of Harbor Safety Committees. I encourage you to contact the PVA staff, your Sector Waterways Management Department, and/or your District Passenger Vessel Safety Specialist to get involved locally with your Harbor Safety Committee.
