The summit drew APV operators from across the country, Canada, and Ireland, as well as Coast Guard personnel from ports with large APV populations, and representatives from NTSB, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Presentations and discussions focused on several key areas including: How APV Operations Have Changed in Recent Years; Establishing an Effective Preventative Maintenance Program; The Current Regulatory Environment; The Importance of Community Relations; How to Effectively Manage a Crisis; Crew Training; and The Impact of the Americans with Disabilities Act on APVs. The summit concluded with an open forum titled, Future Impacts on the U.S. Amphibious Passenger Vessel/Vehicle Fleet, and a call to action regarding the need to revise the NVIC.All the partici- pants agreed the NVIC was outdated and there was a commitment from several operators and manufacturers to help the Coast Guard revise the NVIC. At the May 2018 Coast Guard/ PVA Quality Partnership meeting, PVA staff submitted a request for a Working Group to address the APV NVIC and it was approved.
