After a day of safety training and fit testing of safety gear and respirators, we get to work. Working at both our own docks as well as at the shipyard, the tasks un- dertaken can vary from year to year, with rust busting and painting being the most consistent theme. Our crew becomes intimately familiar with parts of the vessel that many crews never see. They find themselves under tanks and floorboards, inside of walls, and inspecting every hidden space for items which need attention. Beyond painting, we have crew standing fire watch for welders, refinishing wood, hanging wall paper, installing fixtures, removing and installing carpet. You name it, our crew has probably done it. In a typical year, one boat will be chosen for a major facelift. Paint, carpet, wall coverings, and lighting fixtures all get updated to keep the boats crisp and current. This season, we installed two shiny orange Scania engines in the Spirit of Seattle, the workhorse of our fleet. Our crew reworked all the fuel lines, control lines, and electrical wiring for the engines. The considerable pride that our in-house staff rightfully takes in these boats leads to extended benefits. We regularly receive comments during our annual Coast Guard inspections about the exceptional cleanliness and condition of our bilges and holds. Over the years, many of the crew have continued to gain expertise and confidence in their ability to understand how vessels function, making them even more valuable employees. They are also able to earn full paychecks during the time of the year when hours can be scarce. Argosy ends up with happy employees who are invested and care about the vessels they are operating.
