Groundwater Executive Director n Sharing the Waterways For several years, PVA meetings, events and sessions have featured far-reaching discus- sions about the crowding of our nation’s waterways. Many PVA member vessel operators have reported growing congestion nationwide. This congestion is being caused by an apparent flood of new recreational users including those operating kayaks, canoes, paddleboards and a wide range of rental craft. What’s more, many of these recreational boaters have little or no knowledge of the rules of the road. Out of growing concern about this issue, and at the urging of members, PVA is working with various gov- ernmental entities to shed light on this problem, while also focusing on identifying non-regulatory solutions. Most recently, PVA provided comments to a draft National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) study examining shared waterways nationwide. In its comments, PVA said, “PVA members have become in- creasingly concerned about the interaction between commercial passenger vessels and recreational craft (especially human-powered craft) throughout our nation’s congested waterways.” PVA recommended that the NTSB also include in its study an examination of recreational boat rental businesses as well as bareboat charters. The issue of “sharing the waterways” is featured on each of the PVA Region Meetings this fall in the hope of promoting discussion and input by PVA members. Exciting Line-Up of PVA Region Meetings PVA Region Meetings are underway and will continue through early November.
