Elias Agredano & George Santiago, Spirit of Chicago/Entertainment Cruises, Chicago, IL 2016 Winner: Justin Wylie, Entertainment Cruises, Norfolk, VA Paul Belforti, Entertainment Cruises, on three employees winning the awards over two years. “In the last two years, two captains and a first mate from Entertainment Cruises won the Captain Elizabeth Gedney Passenger Safety award,” said Paul Belforti, Entertainment Cruises. “During a cruise on Lake Michigan in Chicago in 2014, Capt. Agredano and First Mate Santiago were made aware of a guest having a medical emergency on board. Due to our constant training and drills, Elias and George knew exactly what to do. They began emergency docking pro- cedures called 911 and deployed all of their onboard resources, including an automated external defibrillator (AED). Their quick actions and will- ingness to control the situation helped save the life of a passenger having a massive heart attack.” “The following year, in Norfolk, VA, Capt. Wylie noticed a small light being waved in a crisscross, zigzag pattern while he was underway with a charter. Justin immediately took this to be a distress signal and he moved his vessel in for a closer look and found a small 19-ft bow rider taking on water and sinking with seven passengers, including children and a pregnant woman onboard. He immediately called in to the Coast Guard and rescued the passengers by deploying his own personal flotation devices to the group and suc- cessfully transfer them all safely into his vessel before the pleasure boat sank. n NOMINATIONS ARE DUE BY NOVEMBER 30 If you know of someone who should be considered for either the Roger Murphy National Marine Safety Award or the Elizabeth Gedney Passenger Vessel Safety Award, complete the nomination form at http://www.pvfoundation.com/awards.
