8 DECEMBER 2018 • FOGHORN FOGHORNFOCUS: SECURITY/VESSEL REVIEW The LUXForm Haven Improve the passenger experience on your vessel and hiding (flight) are quickly exhausted aboard most vessels. The crew must be prepared to fight. Even if the crew has been able to hide, they should be prepared to ambush the shooter if he approaches their location. The hands-on component of our training is conducted by our expert trainers and includes ambush tech- niques, disarming a shooter, applying handcuffs, and certification in the use of pepper spray and pepper gel guns. It is one thing to talk about disarming someone, but another to actually do it. Using props, such as rubber guns and inert pepper spray during hands-on training scenarios provides realistic training and really engages and empowers the crew. Other key concepts we emphasize during our training include: heightened security awareness, communica- tion, and hardening critical spaces. There have been many examples of active shooter threats that were stopped before a shot was fired. The crew must always be on the lookout for suspicious activity and be prepared to address it immediately. Communication is critical during any emergency and having good commu- nication protocols will facilitate response to any incident. Companies should consider hardening critical spaces such as pilot houses, engine rooms, hiding spaces, etc, even though this poses unique challenges to operators. n Learn More!
