South Ferry Company Shelter Island, NY Shipbuilder: Blount Boats A new steel passenger/vehicle ferry is being constructed for Shelter Island, NY. The 101-foot double-ended ferry, to be named Southern Cross, will be built to carry a deck load of 260,000 pounds. Main propulsion will be provided by two Caterpillar series C-18 Tier III & IMO II Certified each rated at 470 HP @ 1800 RPM. Twin Disc MG-516 remote mount, reverse gears will transmit power to 4-blade, nibral ice strengthened propellers through four-foot propeller shafts. The Clark family, owners of South Ferry Company, have been providing transportation between Shelter Island, New York and North Haven, New York on Long Island’s southern tip since the 1700’s. The Southern Cross will be a sister ship to two other Blount-built ferries designed by DeJong & Lebet for South Ferry: the Sunrise, delivered in 2002, and the Southside, delivered in 2009. The Trust for Governors Island New York, NY Operator’s Representative: Glosten Naval Architect/Designer: Elliott Bay Design Group Shipbuilder: Blount Boats When The Trust for Governors Island recognized the need to add another vessel to bring day visitors to this island oasis in New York Harbor, it called upon Glosten to study the project and make recommendations on whether to buy an existing vessel, or build a new one. After review, Elliott Bay Design Group and Blount Boats were awarded the contract to design and construct a new passenger-only ferry for the popular destination. The vessel will be delivered in 2019.
