WSF Honored for Environmental Excellence In late November, Amy Scarton, Assistant Secretary, Washington State Department of Transportation/Ferries Division, announced that the state agency recog- nized the efforts of several Washington State Ferries (WSF) employees by awarding them with the 2018 WSDOT Environmental Director’s Award. The WSF vessel masters and chief engineers won the Environmental Director’s Award for their “extraordinary efforts to reduce fuel use and noise” in support of the Governor’s greenhouse gas and orca protection initiatives. Reducing vessel speed by just one knot resulted in a three percent fuel consumption reduction and a decrease in carbon dioxide emissions. Overall, WSF saved 234,000 gallons of fuel and $491,000 over five months. Over the summer, the ferry Chelan slowed down in the Haro Strait to lower our ambient sound in a critical feeding ground for southern resident killer whales. WSF is a participating member of the PVA Green WATERS Program, which offers useful best green business practices, such as reducing vessel speed to save fuel and money while reducing emissions and protecting marine life. n OBITUARY PVA Bids Farewell to Scania’s Sheldon Murdock On October 25, Sheldon Murdock, National Sales Manager at Scania North America, passed away at age 43.
