34 OCTOBER 2018 • FOGHORN HOW PVA BENEFITS YOU By Jen Wilk, Director, Public Affairs and Development PVA’s Regulatory Committee Is Working for You R ecently, PVA’s Regulatory Committee met to discuss the rules and policy challenges that are facing your business. As you well know, operations like your own are regulated by a number of various federal, state, and local government entities. PVA is your voice in govern- ment, monitoring the variety of regu- lations impacting you business and advocating on your behalf. Under the leadership of Chairman Captain Steve Jones, Gateway Clipper Fleet, Pittsburgh, PA, the committee worked on advancing several initia- tives regarding regulatory issues facing passenger vessel operators. At this meeting, the Regulatory Committee re- affirmed its mission and goals with an energized effort. PVA’s committees are made up of dedicated volunteers from PVA member companies. They are industry experts representative of the diverse regions, waterways, and op- erations that comprise PVA’s mem- bership. The PVA Board of Directors calls upon the committees’ recom- mendations for guiding much of the direction for the association’s position on public policy issues. The PVA Regulatory Committee analyzes regulations and other policy actions, and develops PVA’s position and comments on rulemakings, public hearings, as well as with meetings with Members of Congress, U.S. Coast Guard and federal agency leadership. These activities are all shaped by the work of the committee. Regulatory Reform The committee reviewed its efforts over the past few months to repeal unnecessary and overly burden- Each year, thousands of preventable maritime accidents are caused by operator inattention, cited twice as frequently as the next leading factor.
