OCTOBER 2018 • FOGHORN 27 SAFETYMATTERS changes to the committee for approval. The committee approved the changes and questions will be updated in the manuals and associated online content shortly. Captain DaveAnderson, Fire Island Ferries, Bay Shore, NY, has produced a PowerPoint presentation on fixed fire extinguishing systems and testing of those systems. This presentation was approved by the committee and will be uploaded to the PVA Learning Management System portal. Captain Anderson, a past PVA President, is also looking into mariner medical fitness and a company’s re- sponsibility to track that mariners are fit for duty.At this point, the committee has approved a generic medical form that companies can have employees fill out when they are on new medica- tions for illness or injury subsequent to the issuance of a valid medical cer- tificate. This will be the topic of a future FOGHORN article. New Projects As a result of Captain Anderson’s work, the PVA Fire Fighting Manual is currently under review by the committee. This effort, led by PVA Past President Jeff Whitaker, will look at areas where the current fire fighting manual can be refined. Some areas identified include, fixed firefighting systems, clean agents, and new Coast Guard portable extinguisher sizing guidelines. Thank You, Mike! I would like to thank Captain Mike McElroy, Wendella Sightseeing Boats, Chicago, for his leadership and dedi- cation during his tenure as Chairman of the committee in 2017 and 2018. The new tools noted above were initiated and completed on his watch and will benefit the membership for years to come. It is members like Captain McElroy and those that volunteer for committees and presentations that make this association the leader and voice of the domestic passenger vessel industry. n PROTECTING OVER 1 MILLION LIVES EVERY DAY Survitec is the number 1 global supplier of innovative safety and survival solutions on passenger vessels.
