The larger the vessel, the lower the fuel consumption per passenger when the boat is full. Thus, high speed has so far been limited to routes with enough passen- gers for large vessels. By contrast, A2V’s technol- ogy is a game-changer. Independent of vessel size (from 12 to 30 meters), its fuel consumption at 50 knots of approximate- ly nine liters per 100 kilometers per passenger gives it a capacity range of 10 to 100 passengers. “That fuel consumption figure nearly corresponds to a car’s,” says Huetz. In comparison, the best crew boats typically consume more than 30 liters per 100 kilometers per passenger, and travel below 40 knots. The lightness of the Clémentine in the water is a huge factor in its performance. The vessel’s required propulsive power depends mostly on the weight carried by the water, so reducing this weight is key to greater efficiency. A2V chased weight savings by redesigning systems, pooling equipment and reducing pipe lengths; and it also chose the right engines. “The Scania engines saved us 300 kilos each,” says naval engineer Fabio D’Angeli. “The coupling to the jet did not require a multi- plier due to the engines’ rating. They can operate for many hours at a high rotational speed.” With the arrival of the Clémentine, fuel consumption figures have tumbled. “With the same engine, we go twice as fast, so consump- tion per kilometer is halved,” says Huetz. “We are gaining speed while reducing our carbon footprint and fuel costs.” So what’s next? Huetz says A2V has identified coastal surveillance, passenger transport, pilot boats, offshore traffic and sea taxis as potential markets, and it is launching a new generation of boats, especially small, swift and profitable units.
