On January 27 at the PVA Annual Convention at MariTrends 2018 in Savannah, GA, both vessel operators were recognized with pres- tigious safety awards by the Passenger Vessel Foundation. Michael Borgstrom, President of Wendella Sightseeing Boats in Chicago, IL, is the recipient of this year’s Roger Murphy National Marine Safety Award for his leadership in a number of high-profile safety issues facing the passenger vessel industry, including battling illegal charters and crowded waterways. This award is named in honor of PVA Past President Roger Murphy, the founder of the PVASafety and Security Committee, and is given annually to a deserving employee of a PVA member, as recognition for demonstrat- ing, enhancing or contributing to the overall safety of their organization and the passenger vessel industry. The crew of the American Empress, an overnight cruise vessel operated by the American Queen Steamboat Company of Portland, OR, were honored with the Captain Elizabeth “Beth” Gedney Passenger Vessel Safety Award for their quick reaction to an onboard fire that threatened 175 pas- sengers and the vessel, but resulted in no fatalities, injuries, or serious vessel damage. Named in honor of Captain Beth Gedney, who was PVA’s Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management for many years, this award is presented annually to recognize actions by PVA Vessel members and their employees where safety training, seamanship, and dedication to the best standards of the passenger vessel industry resulted in a significant, positive outcome.
