My first time at a PVA convention taught me that the passenger vessel industry is populated with families just like mine and legends just like my grandfather. Our industry was built upon the shoulders of men and women who dedicated their lives to paving the way for their communi- ties and their children. My father has been a member of PVA for almost as long as I’ve been alive, but this was my first conven- tion. Despite living in the same region, I had the opportunity to meet all three generations of the Anderson family’s operation for the first time. I met members of the family who runs Wendella, another multi-generational family business in Chicago. At the closing dinner, I learned that one man’s vision changed the lives of many others, family or otherwise. Even while not blood related, as passenger vessel operators, we are family. PVA is the traveling home into which we all convene to share ideas, break bread, and knock back a few lemonades. And maybe even cut some deals. Savannah taught me that the value of PVA doesn’t stop at education and representation in Washington. It continues into our businesses, into our daily lives, and into the relation- ships that sustain us. PVA serves as a reminder that we are all in the same boat… pun intended.
