12 March 2018 • FOGHORN FOGHORNFOCUS: CONVENTION REVIEW W hen I was six years old my grandfather, Wilson Hubbard, passed away. I have few real memories of him, despite ex- periencing his legacy every single day. Since childhood, it’s been my personal and profes- sional pleasure to share his story with friends, colleagues, and customers. Today, 23 years after his death, I am determined to further his passion for waterborne transportation. While petition- ing elected officials and local stakeholders to consider ferries as a solution to traffic congestion, I share stories of my grandfather running local ferry routes in lieu of bridges. I see his personality in my uncle, I see his work ethic in my father, and I see his business prowess in my brother. I live inside the stately home he purchased with my grandmother more than 60 years ago. His captain’s license is displayed on my wall. I have his dusty novels, his luggage tags, and All in the Same Boat By Corey Hubbard, Tampa Bay Ferry newspaper clippings detailing his many adventures. Wilson was a colorful captain who paved the way for many anglers and tour operators on our beaches. We are all blessed to have descended from such an entrepreneurial spirit.
