He mentioned safety as a concern especially if a vessel’s electrical systems are automated and therefore could be vulnerable. Other issues under the cyber umbrella are dynamic posi- tioning and the expansion of automated positioning. RADM Servidio stated that there are risks to automated cyber domain links and said that there must be contingencies for consequences of attacks to vessels and ports. “There are 400 electronic aids to navigation throughout the nation, with nine of them in Seattle alone,” RADM Servidio said. Cognizant of PVA Vessel members’ concerns about congested waterways, RADM Servidio acknowledged that many recreational waterways users are not properly trained in waterways management, which is a major challenge to all on the waterways. In regards to the environment, he recognized that new technologies, including emerging fuel sources, are on the rise and that the Coast Guard and industry must together to meet the challenges of safely introducing liquified natural gas (LNG) and hydrogen fuel cells. Understanding the risks and learning to manage them is paramount to moving forward. RADM Servidio encouraged vessel operators to be proactive and involved in Harbor Safety Committees. Finally, he said that to meet these challenges the Coast Guard must “leverage strategies” and “spend less time on low-risk operators and more time on high risk ones.” That’s terrific news for PVA members because RADM Servidio said, “PVA’s safety program is second to none.” He also congratulat- ed PVA members saying, “You’ve come a long way in safety, security and environmental protection.” In 2014, Rear Admiral Servidio testified before Congress to support the passenger vessel industry’s stellar safety record. • Bob Donegan, Ivar’s Restaurants ASeattle icon and noted restaurant owner, Bob Donegan told the audience during his presentation, “Your Customers Are No Happier than Your Employees,” that treating employees well has been the secret to his success for 20 years. Donegan has collected enough statistical data that he can say that Ivar’s typical seafood buyer visits one its restaurants once every 10 days and spends at least $12 per visit, which equates to more than $26,000 over 25 years. Given that, Donegan has empowered employees to do whatever it takes to make customers happy and coming back. This includes giving potentially dissatisfied customers free gift cards of “Great conference!  I think this is one of the best I have been to!” -- Heath Gehrke, Cape May-Lewes Ferry, North Cape May, NJ
