Canoe clubs, in turn, have committed to educating their paddlers that the blast signifies a ship is getting underway; therefore, they shouldn’t cross the channel until safe to do so. The working group also came up with signals from the canoes to indicate they see the commercial ship and will stay clear which allows com- mercial vessel operators to concentrate on maneuvering their vessel versus worrying about the canoe’s inten- tions. One session was actually hosted aboard the small passenger vessel Star of Honolulu, operated by PVA Vessel member Paradise Cruise, Ltd, Honolulu, HI, where members of the canoe paddling community were able to spend time in the pilot house of a 192-foot, 99-gross ton ship and see how small a stand-up paddleboard looks from the bridge of the ship or even a six-man canoe.
