Set to launch before summer 2017, the new ferries will meet the promise of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to connect New York’s five boroughs via ferry service. Mayor de Blasio’s office issued an announcement of the new ferry system on March 16. The announcement said that “the system will operate from 21 landings across the city, and when fully operational by 2018, Citywide Ferry Service will carry an estimated 4.6 million trips per year across six routes, providing new transportation to com- munities where housing and jobs are growing fast.” An estimated 4,000 pas- sengers are expected to ride the ferries that will traverse 60 miles of waterways every day. Expanded Ferry Service in New York to Launch in 2017 Thanks to Several PVA Members Working Together Hornblower already has a presence in New York with its dining and sightsee- ing vessels. PVAAssociate members involved in the design and construction of the 149- passenger ferries are Incat Crowther, which is headquartered in Australia but has a North American office, Metal Shark, Jeanerette, LA, and new member Horizon Shipbuilding, Bayou La Batre, AL. Incat Crowther is designing the vessels and Horizon Shipbuilding and Metal Shark will build them. “Incat Crowther is proud to be involved in such a significant project in one of the busiest cities in the world,” said Grant Pecoraro, General Manager of the design firm’s North American office. The Subchapter T design includes spacious interiors, ADA access, wide aisles, a concession stand, as well as bow loading specifically designed to integrate with standard infrastructure and a foredeck that houses bicycle racks and strollers. Passengers will also enjoy WiFi, power ports for charging small electronics, large LED infotainment screens, and 360-degree views. Other key features of the vessels will be low wash, high fuel efficiency and low emissions, and the ability to operate in cold water in a high-traffic area. Working independently, both Horizon Shipbuilding and Metal Shark will produce the series of ferries. Working from its Franklin, LA shipyard, Metal Shark recently received a Small Shipyard Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration (MARAD) to expand its facilities and shipbuilding capabilities. Discussing the construction of the 85-foot ferries with a running speed of 25-knots from the twin Baudouin 6M26.3 engines, Metal Shark President Chris Allard said, “We are confident in our ability to meet the timeframes and deliver on this challenging and exciting project from the first vessel to the last.” Utilizing its award-winning GORDHEAD management software, which allows the shipyard and clients to remain closely connected throughout the vessel-building NEWSERVICE MEMBERNEWS “It’s full steam ahead for New York City’s first citywide system in over 100 years and a system that will offer a new way to work, live, play.”
