JULY 2018 • FOGHORN 21 BUSINESSMATTERS About the Author Bob Shaw is a veteran industry executive, having led over 100 vessels responsible for over 10 million passengers a year. He can be reached at shawrw@gmail.com. self-control is the foundation of leadership. Are you in control under pressure? • Do you treat everyone the same? Are front line staff, janitors, bellmen, valets and others treated like your important guests or VIPs? Treat your “internal” guests the same way you’d treat your “external” guests. • Are you dedicated to taking care of your people? Ensuring there are good salaries and wages for their contributions, with vital health insurance and other benefits? Does your team know they can truly count on you? Do you share with your team when times are good? Are you investing in their training? • Remember the Platinum Rule: “treat people how they want to be treated,” as we are all different people with diverse paths to the present. Are you customizing treatment for each person? • And when you don’t know what to do, just listen. Leaders too often are barking instructions, or, in my case, telling sea stories, when they ought to be giving everyone some air time. Are you really listening? Our industry has the wonderful advantage of encompassing many family or smaller businesses, so your teams should feel a personal connection and commitment to your leadership. But that will only matter if it is paired with respect, as respect is the founda- tion for communication, teamwork and, consequently, all results. Play the Queen’s song in your mind and deliver it daily in small, concrete ways. You’ll make a powerful difference in your team’s life. What better result can you have as a leader? n Congratulations to Seastreak on the addition of the “SEASTREAK COMMODORE” to their fleet.
