Water-Go-Round, so named as a light-hearted nod that speaks to the cyclical nature of how the technol- ogy works, is expected to be launched in mid-2019. Simply put, hydrogen can be created from water and after being used in a fuel cell, becomes water again.  Since water is the only byproduct of the power system, wide- spread adoption of this technology for shipping and passenger transportation will achieve drastic reductions of pol- lutants and greenhouse gases. “This project is a seed that will grow and produce zero emissions vessels in the USA and beyond. The Water-Go- Round will prove that it is possible to build a sustainable maritime business while at the same time placing our en- vironment first,” Escher said. Dr. Joseph Pratt, who is involved in the project, is an expert in hydrogen fuel cell technology and its applica- tion in the marine industry as well as a 2018 PVA Green WATERS Conference speaker, lauded the project as a “long- term solution to meeting the drastic cuts in pollution and greenhouse gases required by states like California and other governments around the globe.” Funding for this project comes from a $3 million grant from the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The 70-foot aluminum catamaran, designed by PVA Associate member Incat Crowther, has a 22-knot top speed and will be built by PVAAssociate member Bay Ship & Yacht Co. of Alameda. It will highlight the advantages of hydrogen fuel cells for the commercial maritime sector. “Bay Ship is honored to participate in this pioneering effort as builder of the first zero-emission passenger vessel in the United States,” said Bill Elliott, President of Bay Ship and Yacht. Here’s how it will work: The vessel is powered by dual 300 kW electric BAE Systems designs and manufactures propulsion systems for applications around the world, including the one to be used in Water-Go-Round.
