JULY 2018 • FOGHORN 13 FOGHORNFOCUS: ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES motors using independent electric drivetrains from PVA Associate member BAE Systems. Power is generated by 360 kW of proton exchange membrane fuel cells and Li-ion battery packs. Hydrogen tanks will be installed on the upper deck, and contain enough hydrogen to go up to two days between refuelings. And, the cleverly designed “zero infrastructure” flexible fueling arrangement allows the Water-Go-Round to be fueled anywhere with truck access. “With more than 9,000 electric hybrid, fuel cell electric, and battery electric propulsion systems in service around the world, we are advancing mobility, efficiency, and capability of transit, marine, and military markets,” said Steve Trichka, Vice President of BAE Systems’ Power and Propulsion Solutions business area. “We are proud to be integrating the first fuel cell electric passenger ferry in the U.S. to help keep our water and atmosphere clean.” After the vessel is launched it will be operated for three months in San Francisco Bay.  During this period, Sandia National Laboratories, a federal government contractor, will indepen- dently gather and assess performance data. CARB will use the real-world data to verify the suitability of the technol- ogy for marine use. The partners will also collect feedback from passengers and operators to assess the best com- mercial markets. Red and White Fleet plans to buy the Water-Go-Round in order to meet its commitment to 100 percent zero-emission operation. “Incat Crowther is very pleased to be involved in such an exciting project Rose Dawydiak-Rapagnani, who works with Red and White Fleet and Golden Gate Zero Emission Marine, contributed significantly to this report. and building on our many previously designed hybrid vessels,” said Grant Pecoraro. “We are very focused on providing custom design solutions for our clients and this project is a great example of that focus. The use of this cutting edge technology and removal of CO2 emissions is a great step in the right direction for our industry.” Red and White Fleet is an active participate in the PVA Green WATERS Program, which offers PVA members guidance and tools for best green business practices. Red and White Fleet’s Capt. Burgard and company president Tom Escher have both spoken at PVA Green WATERS Conferences, held in conjunction with the PVA Annual Convention at MariTrends, on the feasibility and practicality of con- structing and operating a hydrogen fuel cell passenger vessel. n
