Marine Transportation 4-Year Bachelor of Science Degree/ USCG Unlimited 3rd Mates License The Marine Transportation Operations (MTO) major leads to a Bachelor of Science degree and, if qualified, eligibility to sit for a federal examination for the U.S. Coast Guard 3rd Mate Unlimited Tonnage License. This course of study prepares under- graduates for a career sailing as a navi- gation officer on any size vessel on any ocean. Students learn vessel opera- tions and navigation and subjects such as cargo operations, navigation rules, marine communications, ocean science, ship handling, ship structure, and watchkeeping. MTO majors are required to enroll in the Regiment of Midshipmen andcomplete365seadays. Vessel Operations & Technology (Limited USCG License 1600/500 ton) 4-Year Bachelor of Science Degree T h e Ve s s e l O p e r a t i o n s & Technology (VOT) major leads to a in Small Vessel Operations and a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Vessel Operations and Technology. A student completing the B.S. degree requisites, two additional co- operative work experiences on appro- priately-sized vessels, and a training cruise, and meeting the USCG require- ments, may be eligible to sit for the USCG examination for a license as mate of vessels not more than 500 tons or 1600 tons (depending on their sea service), near coastal or oceans. Small Vessel Operations (USCG 200- ton License) 2-Year Associate of Science Degree The Small Vessel Operations major represents years one and two of the Vessel Operations and Technology (VOT) program (see above). Students seeking the 200-ton mate’s license are required to complete 120 sea days on appropriate vessels. Sea time is acquired through laboratories, simu- lation, cooperative work experiences and a 14-day training cruise aboard the schooner Bowdoin. For those looking for traditional sail training opportunities, we offer an Auxiliary Sail concentration. With sufficient qualifying sea time under sail, and upon successful completion of a sail addendum examination, VOT and SVO licenses can be endorsed for Auxiliary Sail. Marine Engineering Technology 4-Year Bachelor of Science Degree T h e M a r i n e E n g i n e e r i n g Technology (MET) major incorpo- rates many courses from the Marine Engineering Operations (below) program with additional courses in science, mathematics, communications, technical science, and laboratory testing methods. Students entering this major are interested in working at sea with the option of becoming a shore-based technologist, learning to operate the power-generation, electrical, hydraulic, and many other engineering systems of a floating vessel. This major leads to a U.S. Coast Guard Engineering License and requires participation in the Maine Maritime Academy Regiment of Midshipmen. Bachelor of Science degree and prepa- ration for the U.S. Coast Guard ex- amination for 500-ton or 1600-ton Near-Coastal Mate’s License. The Vessel Operations and Technology curriculum is designed to prepare students for positions of responsibility as operators and managers of private and commer- cial vessels, such as tugs and barges, ferries, passenger vessels, tall ships, and yachts.
