Gender affects all aspects of life and where there is gender, there is an opportunity for equity. What does gender equity actually mean? In order to understand this phrase, I will break it down into two sections. First, l am going to expand on the term gender and then move on to the term equity. Gender With many conversations, policies, and rhetoric happening today around the word gender, it can be helpful to under- stand what that term means. Simply put, gender is a social construct. Gender encompasses the roles, expressions, man- nerisms, and expectations society deems appropriate for indi- viduals based on their sex assigned at birth. The more that is understood about gender, the more complex things become.
