A s an alumnus from Maine Maritime Academy (Marine Transportation, 1997), I have seen amazing changes on our campus and in career opportunities for our students over the past two decades. Our graduates are mariners, business people, scientists and shore-side power plant engineers who make a positive impact every day. Often, Maine Maritime Academy students are assumed to be our regimental midshipmen preparing for their sea-going careers, and we do consider our maritime graduates as some of the most highly respected and trained in the world. However, we are truly so much more. In the fall of 1991, as a young man, I came to Maine Maritime looking for travel, money and adventure. Little did I know, I was beginning to open doors that would be the foundation for a career that was so much more than I was expecting. Although my path was typical of an unlimited track student, there were amazing things happening around me at the Academy. During that time, there were new programs starting which would offer more opportunity to our students and meet the demands of industry. International Business and Logistics, Marine Science and Biology, and Vessel Operations and Technology (Limited License) majors were all in their infancy, but would, in less than two decades, represent 50 percent of our student population. Often in business we deal with changing marketplaces, new business and regulatory requirements, and constantly shifting customer and stakeholder needs. OurAcademy is in a perfect position to connect you and your operations with potential and future employees who are ready to step in to management and leaderships roles upon graduation. A student’s education at the Academy is not just class- room-based; hands-on training is promoted and embraced by our faculty and staff. Instead of a typical two-semester school year, many students choose to complete internships during their summers, working in a wide range of indus- tries. Summer cruises, cadet shipping, limited license field experiences, and business internships all supplement a student’s education and allow them to network and build their skill sets. Our graduates enjoy a respected reputation in today’s business, logistics, and transportation industries. Recent employers of our International Business and Logistics graduates, as an example, include: Amazon, Boeing, Carnival Cruise Lines, Caterpillar, Cianbro Corporation, Exxon-Mobil, General Dynamics Bath Iron Works, Hannaford, Ingram Barge, International Paper, L.L. Bean, Poland Spring, Shell Oil, Sappi Fine Papers, Strategic Maintenance Solutions, and Target. Our students and graduates offer a proactive business approach, excellent leadership ability and problem-solving skill sets. We are constantly looking for more opportunities for internships for our students, as well as our young alumni. Below are brief summaries of some of our programs. International Business & Logistics 4-Year Bachelor of Science Degree/Graduate Degree Program The Loeb-Sullivan School of International Business and Logistics offers a Bachelor of Science degree in International Business and Logistics (IBL). The degree gives students a broad and solid business education foundation with an international emphasis and focus on logistics. Graduates of the program develop leadership skills through education and training that develops knowledge and competence, instills confidence, and creates profession- alism for business.
