PVA’s Safety and Security Committee is proud to announce that six new training courses have been added to the PVA Online Learning Management System. With PVAmember Marine Learning Systems, with PVA, has put together additional resources focusing on health and safety training for passenger vessel operators, these materials were developed from a number of public sources. Members of the Safety and Security Committee, specifically Ben Bernstein, BB Riverboats Covington, KY, Steve Jones, Gateway Clipper Fleet, Pittsburgh, PA, and Dave Anderson, Fire Island Ferries, Bay Shore, NY, evaluated the additional courses. The Committee has enthusiastically endorsed this material, and encourages all PVA members to check it out online and consider adding it to their current training programs. The New Health and Safety Training Course Materials Include These courses are designed to provide training for employees and emphasize hazard identification, avoidance and control. Blood Borne Pathogens Provides best practices on limiting oc- cupational exposure to blood and other potentially infectious material. Confined Space Awareness Reviews awareness-level training that addresses potential confined space hazards through anticipation, recogni- tion, evaluation and control. Electrical Safety Identify electrical hazards that may be encountered and the types of injuries resulting from contact with electricity. Flammable Liquids Identify hazards and actions that apply to prevention and a good plan for safe use of flammable liquids. Hazardous Communications Provides training on communication standards for classifying and labeling chemicals. Personal Protective Equipment Discusses types of personal protective equipment for employees and provides training on proper use. PVA’s Current Safety Training Courses Over the years, PVA’s Committees have created a variety of tools and resources based on best management practices to serve you and save you money in development costs. The courses include videos, manuals, and quizzes all hosted online. Here are just a few of the resources available to you through the PVA Online Learning Management System: Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls To assist you and your crew in reducing these most common types of injuries, the Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls video goes through the entire typical vessel, from boarding, to stairs, to deck coverings, assisting you in “accident proofing” your boat and mitigating risk. Line Handling While stressing the importance of vessel safety, this course provides in- formation regarding deck equipment, basic knots and line handling tech- niques and terminology important for every new deckhand. Fire Fighting This course provides information on training your crew in firefighting, pre- vention and education.
