THE VIRTUAL TICKETER visionary leadership, there are other considerations that have contributed to our decision to move forward with the BAE Systems hybrid electric propul- sion system. One consideration is the relative value of a capital investment. The typical amortization schedule for a vessel is 30 years, and while the drive system might amortize over 10 years, we considered it a prudent choice to build a piece of equipment which will keep pace over its life with technologi- cal developments, in this case the move toward the electrification of transporta- tion. There is the consideration of the balance between CapEx and OpEx. In the case of the hybrid propulsion system with its variable speed genera- tors, lithium-ion batteries, and smaller and fewer engines, we expect to see drive system. How did we get to this decision? The short answer is company president Tom Escher is committed to providing our sightseeing cruises on zero emission vessels, and if you were to ask him why, he’d tell you that he believes future generations, including all current Red and White Fleet employees’ kids and grandchil- dren, have the right to live in a world cleaner than the one we inherited from our predecessors. While embracing novel technologies and taking risks can only happen under VESSEL TECH FACTS • Enhydra is a 600-passenger, battery-electric hybrid, 128-ft monohull • Utilizes two 80 kWh lithium-ion batteries • Batteries are Corvus Energy’s next generation Orca Energy line • Features a BAE Systems HybriDrive Propulsion System that includes a generator, control system, and AC electric traction motor • Motor generator is coupled to propulsion shaft • Immediate torque is available for the propeller and speeds can be controlled with a reduction gear • Can be run on full electric mode at slower speeds; higher speeds offer additional power demands from generator • Generator mounts to variable speed Cummins QSL9 410 mhp @2100 rpm diesel engine • Battery system will meet the entire demand of the ferry’s hotel load and provide silent/emission-free operation of the propulsion system for passenger enjoyment • First aluminum hulled, lithium- ion battery-electric hybrid vessel built from the keel up under U.S. Coast Guard Subchapter-K passenger vessel regulations and latest guidelines for structural fire protection
