The ferry’s engine, Cummins QSL9 410 mhp, runs on renewable diesel.Alan Cull, Red and White Fleet’s Operation Manager, went on record touting the benefits of renewable diesel saying,“ It’s a positive impact on our maintenance cycles.” Bay Area ferries and excursion providers, including Golden Gate Ferry, Hornblower Cruises & Events, Blue and Gold Fleet, and Water Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) will begin the transition process through 2019 to renewable diesel, which will include specific field-testing in higher-performing marine engines. WETA’s Keith Stahnke said, “We do plan to start using R99 fuel but it may take at least a few months before we start and it may only be partial fleet use due to warranty restrictions on our newer vessel engines.” Hornblower Cruises & Events committed to switching in 2018. “We are planning to use this type of fuel for ferry operations in the Bay Area,” confirmed Terry MacRae, CEO of Hornblower Cruises. He also said that as of now, he has no plans to use renewable diesel outside of Bay Area, but will evaluate it for other operating locations. Blue and Gold Fleet will transi- tion in 2019. “We will be switching over at the end of the year,” declared Patrick Murphy, President of Blue of Gold Fleet. With a fleet of 19 vessels, the operation offers year-round sight- seeing and commuter service on San Francisco Bay. “San Francisco is not only a hub for knowledge of clean maritime transpor- tation, it is one of action,” said Elaine Forbes, Executive Director of the Port of San Francisco. “At a time with increased water transit ridership, we are pleased to partner with our ferry and excursion providers to be on the forefront of climate action and envi- ronmental leadership for our City and nation.” n
