NOVEMBER 2018 • FOGHORN 31 HOW PVA BENEFITS YOU Safety Advisory Council (NAVSAC). Your voice to these impactful bodies were PVA members Captain Steve Jones, Gateway Clipper Fleet, Pittsburgh, PA, who is also a member of PVA’s Board of Directors, and PVA’s Regulatory Committee Chair and Captain Earnesto Coleman, Hornblower Cruises and Events, San Diego, CAand PVASafety and Security Committee Co-Chair. Both Coast Guard licensed captains with years of on-water experience, these industry leaders not only drive the vessels but also drive the safety culture of their op- erations. Steve and Earnesto told their real world experiences describing con- cerning encounters with recreational boaters who were not familiar with their responsibilities under the rules of the road, and did not understand the risks of operating too close to a com- mercial vessel. Yet, Steve and Earnesto not only spoke about local challenges in their areas, also discussed local progress that’s been made to increase safety. They expressed that PVA is working to promote safety and increased com- munications with these conversations. They stressed that PVA is in no way trying to clear anyone off the water, but actually working to harmonize the operating environment for all.
