Just a week after the storm, even as clean-up was still underway, many of resilient people at Eastern were back at work. Yard Manager Justin Smith released a statement saying, “We are a family at Eastern Shipbuilding.” On October 29, D’Isernia wrote in The Maritime Executive saying, “[Eastern Shipbuilding Group] ESG and its valued partners in the marine industry have aggressively pursued initiatives aimed at helping affected employees through this hard time with food, supplies, water, and other essential goods.” Eastern Shipbuilding has set up a Go Fund Me account through a link on their company website, www.eastern- shipbuilding.com, to assist workers get their lives back on track. D’Isernia noted: “These donations will go towards providing everything from basic essentials like food and water up to temporary accommoda- tions for employees and their families that have lost their home entirely and have nowhere to go. Any amount you can give to the cause would be greatly appreciated by the employees and will go a long way towards helping them get back on their feet and rebuild.” At the end of October, D’Isernia acknowledged that many of the employees were already at work with more returning daily. And, once the shipyard is fully cleared of storm-relat- ed debris, the company is eager to get back to business. As D’Isernia told his employees, “we would love to see you back at work…so we can get back to building quality ships for our valued customers.” Eastern Shipbuilding is working with PVA Vessel member Staten Island Ferry to build three new large passenger ferries. ■
