That process has come a long way. Safety training has evolved into the full-scale adoption of a safety culture. To promote the culture, a robust training program was developed and rolled out by the operation’s Human Resources Department. This has been a big undertak- ing, requiring lots of resources and record keeping. Using PVA Online Learning Management System Safety Training Portal 1. All new hire deck employees are given the access credentials for login in to the portal. Management provides the company basic safety training manual that syncs with the learning portal. The new hire will get to a section within the company manual and be able to enhance the knowledge with the videos and quizzes on the training topics, located on the portal. This can be done at anytime, anywhere. Having the materials web based allows for total flexibility. 2. The refresher training for old salts. No more trying to address veteran employees, when they arrive to the safety meeting with their old textbooks. This system provides a standardized program to allow everyone to be on the same page with basic safety training. This allows them access to the materials to refer to when working with new hires. Using the online portal gives them instant access to clarify a process or technique used in safety training. 3. Security training for all, not just for the operation’s K-Boat. To meet the regula- tory requirement for our vessel with a security plan, this is a great tool. However, the products offered on the portal for security, are also accessible to all crew for all boats adding much higher level of awareness. We have found, with no company requirement to take engage the security tools. The crew will do it on their own, because of the ease of access. The printed certificate helps as an incentive 4. The OSHA Materials are excellent tools for food service operations, as well as deck and engineering, both on the ship and shoreside. n
