The PVA Online Learning Management System provides all members in good standing access to a platform to introduce them- selves to this process of learning a no additional cost to the company.” Of course, getting from the concepts to the actual content took time. Dave Anderson, a PVA Past President and the General Manager at Fire Island Ferries, Bay Shore, NY, recounts some the history that led to the introduc- tion of the current online portal. “As a past chairman of the PVA Safety and Security Committee and member of the Committee since 1997, we are always looking for new ideas and ways of sharing our information with PVA members. Our training videos first evolved as edited videos, which we actually went on scene and shot via videocamerasandaddinginvoicecom- mentary. We then rolled into and out of the VHS era and into the DVD world where we incorporated these videos into a DVD format, which were made available for sale to PVA members. The next phase was introduced as the idea came from a Committee discus- sion about the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) training DVDs and systems being able to provide our training aids online. After all, like it or not, we are in a digital world--so roll with it, and we did.” Bijur works for Island Queen Cruises and Biscayne Lady Yacht Charters, a small group of family- owned-and-operated companies located in Miami, FL with seven inspected vessels, a 200-seat restau- rant, a café, and tour center. Along with being on the Committee that helped develop the LMS, Bijur says his operation uses it. “This system has been a great en- hancement to our training efforts. We have first experienced blended learning with First Aid and CPR training. The results were very positive,” said Bijur. “The opportunity to have such a com- prehensive library of training subjects has been of substantial benefit.” Like Island Queen Cruises and
