To date, the online LMS program has been wildly popular with users who report favorably on the system. As of December 2017, more 300 accounts have been established to access the content. These PVA members have used the portal to access and download the 17 courses (see sidebar) that cover all seven of the main categories of safe- ty-related training subjects that vessel operators need. All are available exclu- sively to PVA members. For decades, PVA has been on the forefront of safety education and training for the passenger vessel industry, which has resulted in being recognized by the U.S Coast Guard as having one of the strongest safety records in the maritime community. This push for stringent safety paradigms started, and still continues today, with tireless efforts of a multitude of PVA members who have volunteered their time and expertise in what is known now as the PVA Safety and Security Committee. PVA’s safety training has been offered to vessel operators in a variety of ways through the years using the best tools available at the time while always looking to the future for new methods to widen the learning oppor- tunities. One such method is blended learning. This concept was introduced to the PVA membership by Murray Goldberg in his March 2017 FOGHORN article, The Value of eLearning for Training Vessel Operators, where he explained that blended learning is a “combination of online and face-to-face training” that has better results for learners because each mode “has strengths the other one cannot offer.” Bob Bijur, who sits on the PVABoard of Directors and is also a member of the PVA Safety and Security Committee, said, “Blended learning is the future Benefits of the PVA Online Learning Management System Training Portal By Karen Rainbolt, FOGHORN Managing Editor
