APRIL 2018 • FOGHORN 41 MEMBERNEWS Greg Kaufman, t h e f o u n d e r a n d Executive Director of PVA vessel member P a c i f i c W h a l e Foundation (PWF) of Wailuku, Maui, HI, passed away on February 10, 2018 after a hard-fought battle with brain cancer. Greg’s legacy of advocacy and activism on behalf of whales, dolphins, and their ocean habitat will continue through the work of the Pacific Whale Foundation, which he founded 38 years ago in response to humpback whales being brought to near extinction by commercial whaling. Nearly four decades later, humpback whale popu- lations are thriving. His organization is a leader in responsible whalewatching and other ocean ecotours. Greg envisioned PWF as “the people’s organization” for ocean pro- tection and conservation. He under- stood that conservation was more than just a message, it was an invest- ment – often saying in earnest, but with good humor: “It ain’t easy being green.” From using reef-safe sunscreen and recycled paper, to eliminating straws on its boats and plastic bags in its stores, he not only expected PWF to practice what it preached, he also kept raising the bar higher and higher for its environmental practices and policies.  Greg was an early supporter of the PVA Green WATERS Program and one of its first participants. He participated in (and made presenta- tions at) PVA Annual Conventions on the West Coast. As a whalewatch- ing pioneer on Maui, he served on the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary Advisory Committee. Greg was also a leader in whale research, ocean conservation, and marine ecotourism at the inter- national level through his involve- ment with the International Whaling Commission and its Sub-committees on Whalewatching, Southern Hemisphere Humpback Whale Assessment, and Bycatch, He also regularly advised governmental agencies and other au- thorities on developing sustainable and responsible dolphin and whalewatch- ing programs, including in Oman, Ecuador, Chile and Australia. n “Aloha” to Pacific Whale Foundation’s Greg Kaufman PVA MEMBERS: Advertise in FOGHORN!
