JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 • FOGHORN 23 PERSPECTIVE Coast Guard. “Find your passion,” I was advised by a previous trainee who focused her program on fire safety and continued on to graduate school for fire systems. My experience in the Coast Guard, my “passion,” has led me to focus on safety culture. “That one case…” has included a number of cases related to safety culture when policy or regulation was already in place. Those cases, some minimal in terms of reporting thresh- olds, some tragic, and some that cham- pioned crew actions and equipment to save the day, have enlightened and strengthened my commitment to public safety in the maritime realm. The first half of my training has in- troduced me to the Health, Safety and Environmental initiatives imple- mented at The Vane Brothers towing company, marine operations strategy from Entertainment Cruises, and legis- lative advocacy and tools from PVA to support safety and security training as well as partnerships. This eye-opening opportunity will help me to contrib- ute to improved safety recommenda- tions from the Coast Guard when I put the uniform back on and report to Headquarters in Summer 2018. We are all committed to make the waterways safer. Thank you for the opportunity to learn from you. Do you have a success story where you were able to improve the safety culture of your company? Any innovative ideas to improve best practices? Send me an e-mail at Amanda.L.Fahrig@uscg.mil, or find me at the Convention, it would be great to hear from you! n WheelHouse is proud to support Entertainment Cruises tracking the maintenance, safety requirements, and documentation for their fleet w w w .
