Are they a growing segment of the waterborne transportation/passenger vessel industry. And, if so, why? ANDREW SARGIS: As the United States economy began to recover from the “Great Recession,” and Millennials began entering the workforce and moving into cities, there became a demand for more recreation, transportation, and “green space” in America’s urban centers. This demand led many cities to leverage their urban waterways to improve quality of life, specifically transportation and recreation. Cities such as Chicago, New York, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Washington D.C. and many others began renovating and revitalizing their urban waterways, or sections of their urban waterways, creating huge opportunities for waterborne transporta- tion and water taxis. A t the PVA Annual Convention at MariTrends 2017 in Seattle, Andrew Sargis, Chief of Operations for Chicago Water Taxi in Chicago, presented a session, What’s New in Water Taxis?, to a standing-room-only crowd. Since then, Sargis has received inquiries on a nearly a weekly basis from operators and others from around the world interested in learning more about operating sustainable water taxi service. FOGHORN caught up withAndrew Sargis to learn about this growing market and what PVA members should know about this emerging transportation trend.
