The Coast Guard Industry Training Program is a launchpad for that curiosity, providing the oppor- tunity to meet energetic representa- tives who show their decision-making process, economic considerations, use of emerging technologies, and dem- onstrate how oversight from the Coast Guard and other regulatory agencies impact their day-to-day operations. The Coast Guard annually convenes a board to assign industry trainees for the five sub-programs of Merchant Marine Industry Training (MMIT), Investigations Industry Training (IIT), Port Safety and Security Industry Training (PSSIT), Environmental Protection Industry Training (MEPIT), and Waterways Management Industry Training (WWMIT). Each sub-program typically slates a one-year trainee and two six-month trainees. Previous Industry Trainees asso- ciated with PVA include CAPT Eric Christensen with PVA in 1998, CDR Heath Hartley with Entertainment Cruises, CDR Marshall Newberry with Hornblower Cruises and Events and their subsidiaries from 2012- 2013, LT John Ramos with Wendella Sightseeing and LCDR Baxter Smoak with Entertainment Cruises in 2016. After completing the one-year IIT, I will begin a follow-on tour at Headquarters Office of Investigations and Casualty Analysis (CG-INV) in Summer 2018. During the applica- tion process, I talked to a number of previous industry trainees about their programs, and the broad range of previous host organizations and agencies affirmed how much there is to learn about maritime industry beyond my regulatory viewpoint within the Industry Training By LCDR Amanda Fahrig, United States Coast Guard
