O n N o v e m b e r 3 , 2 0 1 7 , the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics released the 2016 Highlights of Ferry Operations in the United States. Statutorily mandated and strongly advocated for by the Passenger VesselAssociation (PVA), the National Census of Ferry Operators is a biennial survey of all known ferry boat operations within the U.S. and its ter- ritories. It produces the most compre- hensive “snapshot” of the ferry sector nationally. Key findings from the 163 ferry operators that responded to the 2016 Data from 2016 National Ferry Census is Now Available Census indicate that at least 118.9 million passengers and 25 million vehicles were carried on ferries in the U.S. and its territories in 2015. New York and Washington were the top two states for passenger boardings, while Washington and Texas led the way for vehicles carried. The report takes note of a recent resurgence in ferry ridership in urban areas, particularly in New York City and the San Francisco Bay region. The National Census documents that ferry ridership in the San Francisco Bay area increased by 25 percent between 2013 and 2015. The next census, scheduled for the spring of 2018, will no doubt record a substantial increase in passen- gers carried in New York City because of the influx of new vessels and routes on the East River and elsewhere.
