DECEMBER 2017 • FOGHORN 19 FOGHORNFOCUS: SECURITY/VESSEL REVIEW Other 2017 New Noteworthy Passenger Vessels in Service, Thanks to PVA Associate Members I n O c t o b e r, t h e s t a t e o f Massachusetts’ transportation agency took delivery of a fast ferry built by Gladding-Hearn. The first of two 150-passenger, high-speed, aluminum catamarans designed by Incat Crowther, the 90-foot ferry has two HamiltonJets. Cabin seats were provided by Freedman and upper deck seating was custom fabricated by Gladding-Hearn. Funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), the two vessels will operate year- round commuter service in Boston Harbor. A southeastern Virginia transit authority has a new passenger ferry, thanks to several PVA Associate members. The ferry was designed by BMT Designers and Planners, built by Armstrong Marine, and powered by two Volvo D13-400 Tier 3-compliant engines that turn 36-inch propellers via Twin Disc reduction gears. n WASHINGTON STATE FERRIES,SEATTLE,WA SHIPBUILDER: VIGOR, SEATTLE,WA WSF is expecting to take delivery for a new 144-car/1500-passenger ferry, Suquamish, in 2018. This is another of the Olympic-class vessels that the ferry system is building to update its fleet of large ferries to serve the growing Seattle- area population. n SAN FRANCISCO BAY FERRY (WETA), SAN FRANCISCO, CA San Francisco Bay Ferry WETA is upgrading its fleet with new ferries that will replace aging vessels. Long term strategic plans call for up to 44 ferries in total by 2035 to serve commuters in the San Francisco Bay Area. THE TRUST FOR GOVERNORS ISLAND, NEW YORK SHIPBUILDER: BLOUNT BOATS,WARREN, RI ARCHITECT: ELLIOTT BAY DESIGN GROUP Slated to be completed in March 2019, the vessel will provide passenger ferry service between Battery Maritime Building in Lower Manhattan and Soissons Landing on Governors Island, NY. The initial vessel design will have a maximum holding capacity of 300+ passengers, with a length of 132 feet.
