OCTOBER 2017 • FOGHORN 37 MEMBERNEWS PVA Associate member ABS of Houston, TX, is evaluating liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) as a marine fuel. ABS, a leading provider of classification and technical services to the marine and offshore industries, has been selected by an international LPG shipping company that owns and operates of a fleet of very large gas carriers to provide an in-depth, techno-economic analysis, laying out compliance options for impending global sulfur cap requirements. ABS will help evaluate the various fleet compliance options, including LPG as a marine fuel, installation of scrubbers, and use of low-sulfur fuels. It is important to fully understand the technical implications and risks of applying an alternative fuel source, such as LPG. Before options are considered, ABS will perform a comprehen- sive “LPG as Fuel” technical evaluation in order to define the most advantageous options to serve the needs of the specified vessel design. The evaluation will consider the applicable regulations, the design capabilities and limitations, the installation and safety requirements, the operating features and equipment restrictions. At this time, LPG is being considered as a marine fuel for international shipping vessels. It remains to be seen if LPG might be a viable fuel for the U.S. domestic passenger vessel fleet. Earlier this year, the world’s first liquid propane gas (LPG)-fueled ferry design using a gas turbine successfully completed Hazard Identification (HAZID) meetings for a Korean ferry. In that project, GE, which is deeply involved in the propulsion system, announced that, “increased use of LPG worldwide has made this ferry project feasible. The ship is designed to ensure both economic benefits and environmental performances, adopting LPG as the main fuel for lower fuel costs and no emission of sulfur oxides (SOx).” n ABS to Evaluate LPG as Marine Fuel WATERS Program provides guidance for vessel operators on how to implement an environ- mental program with best green business practices to ensure America’s waterways are safe, clean, and healthy. Currently more than 200 vessels comprise the PVAGreen Fleet, which carry more than 54 million passengers annually. Guidance for the PVA Green WATERS voluntary program can be found in the Members Resource at www.passen- gervessel.com. Documents can be downloaded from the PVA “Members Only” section on the website. If you provide ferry services or your community is looking at introducing one, this conference is designed for you! OCTOBER 19TH, 2017 RENAISSANCE SEATTLE HOTEL • SEATTLE, WA “Great conference! Of all the similar events I have been to, this was the best, as far as making good business connections and building existing relationships. The sessions provided just the right balance between the technical and political, and were geared well for the audience that attended. You and your team did a fine job — hats off to you!” Greg Jose, Marketing Manager, BMT Designers and Planners SPONSORSHIPS Bill Forslund bill@philipspublishing.com (206) 284-8285 EVENT PROGRAMMING Peter Philips peter@philipspublishing.com (206) 284-8285 REGISTRATION & OTHER INQUIRIES Denise Philips denise@philipspublishing.com (206) 284-8285 Ferries Conference is proudly produced by Pacific Maritime Magazine GOLD SPONSOR SILVER SPONSOR BRONZE SPONSORS SUPPORTING ORGANIZATION www.ferriesconference.com
