Something needed to be done with the combustion efficiency of this historic and breathtakingly beautiful ship. “Although the engines were func- tioning as they should for engines built in 1992, they do emit a black soot, which caused concern for the Coast Guard,” explained Alan. “We needed a solution that reduced the particulates coming from our engines.” UGFT representatives visited Newport after the ship’s engines underwent injector repair and engine tuning which reduced the particulate matter to a respectable level. Could further reductions be achieved? After six weeks of DPF Remedy treatment, Whayne Caterpillar Technology Division was contracted to conduct the emissions testing, which resulted in a 77 percent further reduction in measurable soot. “It appears that UGFT has done a good job to reduce the black soot par- ticulates,” Bernstein said. “While it may be a little early to know for certain that it will make a long-term difference, I’m optimistic because the early results are staggering.” PVA Green WATERS Program member Waterways Cruises and Events, Seattle, WA, just embarked on its quest to reduce the soot from its engines’ emissions. Founder Hilton Smith reached out to UGFT to reduce the soot that comes from his older engines on Emerald Star, a 105-foot dining vessel. “This product is new for us, but I’m eager to reduce the soot that may harm the waterways’ ecosystems and covers our vessels, which is unsightly,” said Hilton. “I am also very interested in conserving fuel because I want to burn less carbon while saving money.” Hilton is tickled that the DPF Remedy treatment consists of one small tablet, “about the size of an aspirin,” that he adds to every 300 gallons of fuel. “We only started using the treatment a few weeks ago and we’re awaiting test results to measure our fuel burn this month against the same time period last year,” Hilton explained. “But, I can already tell that there’s less soot on the Emerald Star’s white paint so there’s less maintenance and cleaning that has to be done to keep the vessel looking its best.” n About the Author With a 25-year career in transportation and distribution, John Andrews is the President of Ultra Green Technologies and is eager to help PVA members “go green” by reducing soot and particulates while conserving fuel and helping vessel operator’s bottom line.
