MEMBERNEWS Green WATERS Tips Five Easy Ways to Be Cleaner and Greener Hilton Smith, founder of Waterways Cruises and Events, Seattle, WA is as committed to the marine environment in which he operates as he is to the bottom line of his excursion and dinner boat operation. As an active participate in the PVA Green WATERS Program, he is always looking for new ways to improve his business and protect and preserve the environment. “I find that I am often able to spend less money and still do environmentally positive things that help my customers, my community, and my business,” Smith said. Here are five ways that Waterways Cruises and Events is cleaner and greener than ever. 1. Avoid heavy chemicals. Use biodegradable soaps and cleaners on the vessel so as to not foul the waterways and harm marine life. 2. Keep it real. By using real linens, flatware, china, and glassware, you are keeping plastics and paper out of the waste stream. Not only does it look more elegant, it dra- matically reduces harmful waste. 3. How does your garden grow? Planting an organic herb garden saves us money because nearly a third of our usage of basil, rosemary, and parsley is grown in our own 6-foot by 30-foot garden and we able to serve fresh organic herbs to our diners. PVA Green WATERS—We Are Taking Environmental Responsibility/ Stewardship 4. Put a keg in it. Kegs aren’t just for beer. Kegged wine is a perfect way to serve locally sourced wine aboard a vessel because the wine stays fresh, it’s less expensive, and there’s no waste! The reusable wine kegs cuts back on recycled waste fees, and the cost of wine keg is less than buying bottles. 5. Keep it clean. “We cleaned up our stretch of the waterway shallows and removed two tons of trash from the bottom,” Smith reported. As a result, the water is not only clean and clear, but the ecosystem has com- pletely rebounded with otter, beaver, geese and growing numbers of salmon claiming the area as their homes…all in downtown Seattle.
