Hopkins will lead staff at the Tom Sawyer and Becky Thatcher river- boats, continuing to make the boats a downtown St. Louis destination and a vital component of the Gateway Arch experience. With more than 24 years of ex- perience in the cruise, maritime and hospitality industries, Hopkins joins the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch from his most previous position as captain and pilot of the Queen of the Mississippi riverboat. There, he oversaw all operations and command of the 150-passenger cruise ship, leading excursions on the Mississippi, Ohio, Cumberland, Columbia and Snake rivers. His previous experience also includes working as the general manager, captain and managing partner for Romance Cruise Lines, where he oversaw operations for a 400- passenger fine and casual dining cruise boat, and the captain and owner of St. Johns River Cruises. Hopkins holds a 200-ton master captain’s license from the United States Coast Guard and has served as a board member for the Community Redevelopment Agency for the City of Sanford, Fla., and the Seminole County Tourist Development Council. “Robert’s impressive leader- ship in the maritime industry makes him a great fit to lead the team at the Riverboats at the Gateway Arch,” says Jenny Nixon, executive director of Tourism Innovation at Bi-State Development, which owns and operates the riverboats. “He is committed to providing the best and safest experience for our passengers, and we welcome his fresh perspective on riverboat cruises and look forward to working with him.” “I’ve spent all my life on the water, and I can’t wait to continue working on the Mississippi River doing what I love in a city that has such rich riverboat history,” says Hopkins. “This is an exciting opportunity to refresh the riverboats’ guest experience and help our passengers create lasting new memories.” Tom Dunn, who previously held the director of operations position, retired earlier this year. n
