Navigating your Aon Risk Solutions Marine a vessel owner. Returns are maximized when the system is correctly dimen- sioned for the specific vessel, and includes intelligent power control. PVA Associate member Rolls-Royce is launching a lithium-ion based energy storage system for vessels. The gain for the ship owners is a clean, safe and cost- efficient complete system. Rolls-Royce offers SAVe Energy, a cost competitive, highly efficient and liquid cooled battery system with a modular design that enables the product to scale according to energy and power requirements. SAVe Energy comply with international legislations for low and zero emission propulsion systems. While conceived in Europe, the technology will also be available in the United States for passenger vessel operators. The initial devel- opment work was partly funded by the Norwegian Research Council of Norway’s ENERGIX program working with Norwegian industry partners in the storage system’s development, ensuring that the energy storage system covers a wide variety of marine appli- cations, including ferries, cruise vessels and multi-purpose vessels. “This new system is available for commercial vessels globally, USA included. For ferries and passenger cruise vessels it is well suited as part of the power system onboard,” said Anette Bonnevie Wollebæk, Senior Communications Manager - Nordic Region at Rolls-Royce Marine AS. “It can be used in a hybrid setup, but also as the main power source for a fully battery-powered ferry.” SAVe Energy can be applied to several areas including peak shaving, spinning reserve and battery powered vessels. Combined with a LNG or diesel powered engine in a hybrid solution, it will increase efficiency and reduce emissions, and can be coupled with most types of propulsion units. In a hybrid set up, SAVe Energy handles the peak load, while the main power generators will relate to the average load and not reduce the propulsion units thrusting capabilities. Autonomous Vessels It was only a matter of time before autonomous vessels would be intro- duced to U.S. waterways. That time could be now. Jeanerette, LA-based shipbuilder Metal Shark, a PVA Associate member, has recently introduced “Sharktech” autonomous vessel technology available for its entire portfolio of vessels, including passenger vessels. “Sharktech autonomous vessel tech- nology opens up a myriad of opportu- nities for operators in all sectors,” said Metal Shark CEO Chris Allard. Beyondsimplewaypointnavigation or the execution of pre-programmed mission routes, the new technology Sharktech’s ASView onboard digital control system features dynamic collision avoidance with robust de- cision-making capability.
