32 SEPTEMBER 2018 • FOGHORN NEWSWIRE Each year, thousands of preventable maritime accidents are caused by operator inattention, cited twice as frequently as the next leading factor. The Furuno BR500 Bridge Navigational Watch Alarm System (BNWAS) helps to prevent these accidents. Scan this code with your smart phone for a Guided Tour of the BR500. www.FurunoUSA.com Pursuant to federal law, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (U.S. Department of Transportation) conducts the National Census of Ferry Operators every two years. It produces the most comprehensive “snapshot” of the ferry industry in America. PVA uses the resulting National Ferry Database to advocate at national and state levels for policies that promote ferry transportation in the U.S. Having the best statistical data about the ferry sector is immensely helpful to PVA’s effort. Among other things, the data collected is used by the Federal Highway Administration to allocate ferry capital grants to qualified ferry operators. PVA wholeheartedly supports the National Census of Ferry Operators. In order for the 2018 National Census of Ferry Operators to produce the most complete compilation of data, it is essential for every PVA ferry operator – whether public or private - to participate. Each operator should have already been contacted by the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and given a user name and password for the online survey. Please complete the online survey at the earliest possible time to the best of your ability. If you have not received a survey from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, please contact BTS’s Survey Statistician, Ms. Janine McFadden, at 202-366-2468 or Janine.mcfadden@dot.gov. In the alternative, please contact PVA’s Ed Welch at 1-800-807-8360 ext. 27 or at ewelch@passenger vessel.com. n Two New Members Join National Transportation Safety Board The National Transportation Safety Board welcomed two new members this month, bringing the Board back to its full strength of five members.
