H2O SAFETYMATTERS By Eric Christensen, Director of Regulatory Affairs and Risk Management I first heard the term cyber hygiene at an Industry Day in New Orleans this past May. It was on a panel discussing technology and cyber security, and one of the panelists said that keeping cyber threats at bay amounted to two basic steps - keep your software updated and have employees practice good cyber hygiene. The first step I understand. The second one I had to Google, because that is what we do now when we have questions. Cyber Hygiene Defined Good personal hygiene is something we’re taught from a young age that through repetition and constant nagging from your mother sticks with you for life. It involves three basic principles: using products that fit our hygiene needs, performing hygiene tasks correctly, and estab- lishing a routine. And this concerns technology how? According to Digital Guardian (digitalguard- ian.com) cyber hygiene is “…the practices and steps that users of computers and other devices take to maintain system health and improve online security. These practices are often part of a routine to ensure the safety of identity and other details that could be stolen or corrupted. Much like physical hygiene, cyber hygiene is regularly conducted to ward off natural deterioration and common threats.” The Right Products (and Tools) While you can brush your teeth with your finger, it is just Cyber Hygiene – Keep it Clean Folks
