PVA Goes to the White House On Monday, March 13, John Groundwater, Eric Christensen and I had the privilege of meeting with Admiral Peter Gautier at the White House. ADM Gautier will be transitioning into the Assistant Commandant for Prevention position, replacingADM Paul Thomas who will be going to the Eighth Coast Guard District. ADM Gautier had requested the meeting showing interest in our concerns and positions. Over lunch we discussed the vitality of the industry, the fact that our vessels carry over 200 million pas- sengers a year, and that the shipyards are busy. We reiterated with the Admiral that we had deep concerns over diminishing Coast Guard inspec- tion resources and restated that we wanted the Coast Guard to be our in- spectors. Also discussed were illegal charters and theAssociation’s position that there should be some type of education and licensing for recreation- al boaters. We expressed PVA’s desire that the Admiral find time to sit in on the Quality Partnership meetings. On March 14 and 15, PVA officers and staff met in Alexandria, VA for the annual Strategic Planning Meeting. During this day-and-a- half meeting there was a discus- sion of both short- and long-term goals for the Association. What is the Association’s position in the industry and is the Association doing every- thing that needs to be done to stay current? The organization is not static. It must change to meet new challenges and membership requirements. The Officers and Staff are always willing to listen to input from the membership. You are the Association. Enjoy the spring and be well.
